Erika Richter was born in Aachen but grew up in Chemnitz (then Karl-Marx-Stadt). From 1956-1960 she studied filmdramaturgy at the German College of Film in Potsdam-Babelsberg. From 1960-1961 she worked as an editorial assistant for the journal “German Film Art”. From 1964-1967 she completed additional studies at the All-Union Film Institute (WGIK), Moscow. From 1964-1967 she was an editor of the journal “Filmwissenschaftliche Beitrage” (Film Studies: Contributions) or “ Filmwissenschaftliche Mitteilungen” (Film Studies: Announcements). From 1967- 1969 she worked as a teacher of German at the Cultural Centre of the GDR in Cairo. From 1969-1971 she again took up her job as an editor of the journal “Filmwissenschaftliche Beitrage”. From 1971-1975 she worked on her thesis and conferred the degree of doctor on DEFA films about women in the 70s (“Der Dritte” and “Die Schlüssel”, dir. Egon Günther; “Die Legende von Paul und Paula”, dir. Heiner Carow“; „Leben mit Uwe“, dir. Lothar Warneke). In 1974 she published a book entitled The realistic Film in Egypt, Henschel Publishers, Art and Society, Berlin. From 1975 – 1991 she worked as a dramaturge at the DEFA feature film studios. Since 1991 she has been a member of the selection committee of the International Forum for the Young Film of the Berlin International Film Festival. From 1992-1999 she was the editor of the journal “Film and Television”. Since 1993 she has been a member of the board of the association “Berlin Art Cinema Babylon”. From 1993-2001 she was a member of the commission for project promotion A of the Federal Ministry for Internal Affairs/ Federal Representative for Culture and Media. Since 2000 she is a co-editor of the yearbook of the DEFA foundation »apropos: film«.
